Anxiety can feel overwhelming. It can make your heart race, your thoughts spin, and your body feel tense. It can affect sleep, focus, relationships, or the things you used to enjoy, and it might show up as constant worry, panic, or fear. The good news: anxiety management can help.
Anxiety is treatable, and you can learn skills to manage it. Anxiety disorders are very common, but many people never learn proven tools to manage them. Let’s look at some of the anxiety management strategies you can implement in your daily life.
Notice and Track Your Anxiety Triggers
One powerful strategy is to notice what sets off your anxiety. Try this simple practice for one week:
- Write down the situation: where you were, who you were with
- Note your worrying thoughts like “I’m going to mess this up” or “They’ll think I’m weird”
- Rate your anxiety from 0–10
This helps identify patterns in your thoughts and triggers. Understanding your triggers helps you plan how to respond rather than react.

Calm Your Body: Relaxation and Breathing Skills
Anxiety is not just “in your head.” It lives in your body too! Try these simple anxiety management strategies to help calm your mind and body:
- Slow breathing: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, then breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds, and hold again for 4 seconds. Repeat this at least three times.
- Grounding: Look around and name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.
- Muscle Relaxation: Tense and then release muscle groups starting at your toes and moving up to your head.
- Sensory Engagement: Listen to music, engage in hobbies (e.g., reading, sewing, drawing), or step outside.
Challenge Anxious Thoughts
Anxiety often tells you scary stories like “Something bad will definitely happen,” “I can’t handle this,” or “Everyone will judge me.”
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety. It helps you notice and challenge these thoughts and replace them with more balanced ones.
When you notice yourself thinking negative thoughts, ask:
- What is the evidence for this thought?
- Is there another way to look at this situation?
- What would I say to a friend who had this thought?
Over time, this can help “rewire” your thinking patterns so anxiety has less power over you. Our anxiety therapy services use tools like CBT to help you understand your anxiety and gain control.
Practice Mindfulness and Acceptance
Trying to “fight” anxiety can sometimes make it stronger. Mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies teach you to notice your thoughts and feelings without judgment, and let them come and go.
Simple mindfulness techniques:
- Pay attention to your breath for 1–2 minutes. Notice each inhale and exhale. How does your body feel when you breathe?
- Do a daily task, like making tea, very slowly. Focus on the sounds, smells, and movements. What do you notice?
- When an anxious thought appears, name it: “There’s my worry about health again,” instead of getting pulled into it
Build Daily Habits That Support Your Mental Health
Small, steady changes can make a big difference over time. Helpful habits include:
Regular sleep: Create a bedtime routine to help calm your mind and body
Movement: Move your body daily; even short walks can ease stress
Connection: Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist when things feel heavy
Balanced nutrition: Ensure you are eating foods that support your energy and mood
Limit Alcohol/Caffeine: Nicotine and caffeine can worsen symptoms, so reducing your intake can promote better control
