What exactly is a Student Counsellor?
There are several words to describe this position: Student Counsellor, Student Therapist, Pre-licensed Professional, Intern Therapist, Therapist in Training, Student Clinician, and so on. They all essentially mean the same thing – student counsellor’s are a counsellor in the field, working towards full licensing. At Rebound, our student counsellors have all completed their course work education in counselling psychology at a Master’s level and are currently working towards registering as a licensed therapist. It also means that they work under the supervision of a fully registered psychotherapist, social worker, or psychologist. These individuals which we call supervisors are specially trained in supervision and assist student counsellors in the practical application of our studies.  What this means for you – you get quality counselling services from a student counsellor, with the knowledge that there are two professionals ensuring your case is well handled!
What services do I receive from a student counsellor?
Student counsellors adhere to the same regulations, ethics and requirements as our fully licensed therapists! You will receive high quality counselling services with the added benefit of a second professional reviewing the decisions made for your case! Your confidentiality and consent are of utmost importance. So, from the very start, we disclose that student counsellors are under supervision and your file will be reviewed with the supervisor as well as the therapist. Otherwise, anything you say within therapy stays between you and your counsellor. Student counsellors are well equipped to help you through a wide range of presenting problems, from anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, grief and even relationship issues – most mild to moderate mental health struggles are well suited to the qualifications of a student counsellor.
Why are student counsellor’s less expensive than licensed therapists?
Great question! First and foremost, licensed therapists are more expensive as a result of more extensive training and experience. However, this doesn’t mean that your student counsellor is inexperienced! While student therapists are learning and working under supervision of a supervisor, they typically charge less. Lower rates, offers a great alternative for those clients who are wanting therapy but don’t have benefit coverage or who are exploring therapy for the first time but not comfortable paying for expensive therapy services. At any time, if finances are of concern to you continuing or starting therapy, contact us to see if we have sliding scale positions available to make it affordable for you. We strongly believe that therapy should be affordable and accessible.
