Amanda Geleynse

Student Therapist - MACP (IN PROGRESS) Registered Psychotherapist (qualifying)

Hi! I’m Amanda Geleynse, a student and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) at Rebound Total Health. I am passionate about creating a safe and welcoming space for individuals who are hurting, seeking support, hoping to strengthen their mental health and well-being, or feeling as though they have nowhere else to turn. Since my undergraduate studies in psychology, I have been fascinated by how our minds are shaped — how biology, experiences, relationships, and culture all play a role in who we are. I am drawn to therapy because it creates space for both the beauty and the hurt we carry. In that space, we can explore with empathy and understanding, grow in self-compassion, and find peace in the tension of pain and beauty, moving forward in a healthier, more holistic way. My work with marginalized communities in Hamilton and abroad has deepened my commitment to supporting individuals who have faced pain, discrimination, or exclusion. Above all, I care about creating a safe, accepting space where people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Working with Amanda Geleynse

My goal is to create a safe space where you can be exactly as you are. There is no judgment here. Instead, you can feel comfortable exploring what brings you here, deepening your self-understanding, and experiencing the support needed for healing to take place. For many people, there may be few spaces that feel safe to do this. My goal is to welcome you and work together to create an experience that is tailored to your needs.

Worth mentioning

As clients decide who they want to work with for counselling, there’s lots to take into consideration! Here are some additional perks you should know of!

Maybe you haven’t had a space where you feel totally safe and accepted for who you are. You are accepted here. When you walk in the door, you will know that you “belong” in this space. Starting from a welcoming place of belonging is the first step towards healing.

I will listen to you, genuinely get to know you, and work to understand your story from your perspective.

I am approachable and down-to-earth, and I strive to make our conversations feel comfortable. I won’t use over-your-head ‘therapy language,’ and I believe that laughter and lightness can ease the natural nerves that often come with starting therapy, or at any point in the process. Sometimes we just need to take a breath together and have a lighter conversation, and that’s okay, too.

What does a session with me look like?

Sessions with me are relaxed. I create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment, so you can feel comfortable sharing what you want and need to. From the moment we meet, I want to get to know you, and we will take the time to do so. We will also explore your goals and desires for counselling and discuss ways to help you achieve them, practising techniques as needed. I work collaboratively, which means we work together. It is essential for you to know that you are the expert on your life, not me. However, I am here to help guide deeper awareness of all aspects of you – the physical, emotional, social, and cultural. As we progress through counselling, the process will be uniquely tailored to who you are and your goals, both within the sessions and in the overall outcome.

My Approach

I take a person-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive approach, creating a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can safely explore your identity and healing goals. I understand that trauma can reshape the brain, influencing thoughts, emotions, and behaviours in lasting ways, which is an important foundation for understanding mental health. Because healing takes time and trust, I place great importance on building a therapeutic relationship where you feel seen, heard, and respected. I also recognize that your cultural background and intersecting identities shape how you experience both the world and therapy. My goal is to honour those experiences and work collaboratively with you in a way that reflects your values and needs.

Person-Centered Therapy (PCT)

I respect the autonomy of the client in the counselling process and understand they are the experts of their own lives. I demonstrate unconditional acceptance and respect for the person in front of me, showing up as my genuine self in the therapeutic relationship, and care deeply about what brings you here.

Trauma-informed

I understand that trauma affects the brain and shapes how we see and experience the world, and I recognize that each person’s trauma is unique and influenced by their sociocultural environment. With this foundation, I take an empathetic approach, moving at your pace to build safety and trust while exploring how trauma has impacted you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Together, we will work toward processing these experiences and healing from them.

Solution-focused

From a solution-focused approach, we will focus on goals for therapy. Exploring the strengths you possess, your available resources and what has worked for you in the past will provide the stepping stones for achieving your therapeutic goals.

Narrative Therapy

Our stories matter—the ones we tell ourselves, the ones others tell about us, and the ones we share about who we are. Through narrative therapy, we will explore the stories that have shaped you, the stories you carry, and the stories through which you view the world. Together, we may reimagine some of these narratives, find gentler ways to tell them, or view them from new perspectives. Narrative therapy offers a way to work with the stories that have harmed us or left us feeling stuck, and to discover new ways of telling them—or even creating new stories altogether.
