MEET YOUR THERAPIST

Sue McDermid

Registered Social Worker

Hi! I’m Sue!

B.Ed., MSW, RSW and Independent Contractor at Rebound Total Health. I have worked with children and teens in various capacities for over 30 years, and supporting children/adolescents and their families continues to be a passion of mine. My professional experience includes working in education as both a teacher, a social worker and an education liaison. I also bring to my clinical practice lived experience as a treatment foster parent, as well as experience supporting families who have children with autism, ABI/TBI, developmental and learning disabilities.

It is my belief that we need to support parents and caregivers so the entire family unit can thrive. My current focus as a virtual clinician with Rebound Total Health is supporting individuals who have experienced trauma, as well as families that are seeking support with parenting, navigating social services or education systems, as well as fostering and adoption. I continue to work with children and teens, but have daytime availability only (for new clients) at this time.

Working With Me

My goal when working with clients is to support you in whatever way makes sense for you or your children. We can do the cognitive work from a cognitive behavioural framework. Or we can bring our animals into our sessions (yes, even virtually!) and take a more somatic approach. Everyone is unique and what is important to me is that it feels right for you and we decide together.

Worth Mentioning

As clients decide who they want to work with for counselling, there’s lots to take into consideration! Here are some additional perks you should know of!

1. Experience: With over two decades of experience working with children, youth, adults & their families, I’ve worked both in child welfare, education and in one on one therapy settings.

2. Relatable approach: I’m not your ‘traditional’ therapist - I’m fun, personable, easy going and will fidget alongside you (or your children) whenever I have the chance.

3. Animal Assisted Options: I’m a firm believer in the healing power of animals and any four legged, slimy or crawly critters are always welcome to join you in session.

What does a session with me look like?

When working with me, you can expect an easy-going, warm, friendly approach. For adults, we will discuss your goals and wishes and go from there. For children, I will work with them at an age and ability appropriate level, with input and consultation with families as needed.

My Approach

My approach to counselling is to first create an environment that feels safe for you and/or your children. I believe that safety is essential to integrate and process difficult emotions or experiences. I do not believe in ‘fixing’ anyone – we are not broken. But I do believe in building community and supporting you if you have areas in your life that are causing distress or if you have goals that you would like to achieve. It takes a village and the more involved families are, while maintaining a confidential and therapeutic environment for your child, the better.

Client-Centered

This is your life and I am here to support you. Let’s work together. I strive for my clients to feel heard, supported and valued.

Animal Assisted

If you are an animal lover, talk about them, share your love and experiences with me, bring your dog, bunny, lizard or gold fish into session with you. There are many ways we can incorporate the therapeutic healing power of animals into your sessions.

Strengths-Based

Discover and develop your strengths and unique and wonderful talents. This approach is not problem-focused, but instead involves positivity and empowerment.
