What is affordable counselling?

At Rebound Total Health, we recognize that while therapy and counselling services are important, they can be expensive for many. Perhaps you’re a student, are working part time maybe you’re a stay at home parent or don’t have benefits to help cover the costs of therapy. Whatever your situation, we understand that paying for therapy can be tough. Traditional sessions will cost anywhere between $115-$160 plus tax for a 50-minute session.

Average cost

With our affordable counselling, we are able to offer individual counselling sessions for a much more affordable rate of $90 per 50-minute individual session and $110 per 50-minute couples session. We hope that this rate provides greater access to counselling services for more individuals and couples than ever before! If this rate is not affordable to you, please contact us – we reserve a limited number of sliding scale slots for those who require.

What is a student counsellor?

A student counsellor is typically a Master’s Level student working towards completion of a Master’s degree in a counselling related field. At this stage in their education, they have completed the coursework component of their program and are in the final stages of completing direct client hours for licensing. Student counsellors are required to operate under close supervision of a Registered Psychotherapist and receive ongoing professional support.

Frequently Asked Questions about Affordable Therapy

Mostly because of who you’re seeing, not because you’re getting half a therapy session.
Our lowest-cost counselling options are offered by student therapists completing the clinical portion of their graduate-level training. They’re newer to the field, so their rates are lower.
You’re still getting a full therapy appointment. Same office. Same confidentiality requirements. Same expectation that your therapist actually knows what they’re doing.
Just considerably friendlier to your bank account.

Yes. “Student therapist” does not mean we found someone taking Intro to Psychology and handed them your file.
Our student therapists are completing graduate-level counselling programs and have reached the clinical part of their training, where they work directly with clients.
They’re also supervised by experienced registered clinicians throughout their placement.
Newer? Yes.
Random person with a clipboard? No.

Student therapists regularly meet with their clinical supervisors to discuss their work and make sure they’re providing appropriate care.
That means aspects of your therapy may be discussed in supervision.
Your therapist will explain how supervision and confidentiality work before you start, including how your information is handled.
It’s basically another experienced clinical brain helping behind the scenes.

No.
You could have a perfectly decent income and still look at the cost of weekly therapy and think, “Absolutely not.”
People use affordable counselling because they don’t have benefits, have limited coverage, are students, are on parental leave, have a pile of other expenses, or simply want therapy to fit comfortably into their budget.
There’s no financial suffering contest required.

Yes. That’s a big reason these options exist.

If you’re paying completely out of pocket, even a relatively small difference in session fees adds up quickly.

We offer lower-cost counselling options, including student therapy and limited sliding-scale spaces, so having no benefits doesn’t automatically mean therapy is off the table.

Tell us what you can realistically afford and we can help you look at the options.

Absolutely.

In fact, that’s one of the advantages of choosing a lower-cost therapist.

If a higher session fee means you can only afford therapy once every month or two, a lower rate may make weekly or biweekly appointments more realistic.

And yes, biweekly means every two weeks here. We’re not starting that debate.

A lot.

Anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationships, self-esteem, school, work, family problems, life changes, feeling stuck, overthinking everything, or generally having a rough time.

You don’t need to arrive knowing the official clinical name for what’s going on.

“My life is kind of a mess right now” gives us plenty to start with.

There are situations where we may recommend working with a more experienced or specialized clinician.

That can depend on the complexity of what you’re dealing with, safety concerns, the type of treatment you need and whether the student has the appropriate training and supervision to work with it.

We’d rather match you with the right level of care than squeeze you into the cheapest option just because there’s an opening.

This is one of the trade-offs of working with a student therapist: placements eventually end.

You won’t just show up one Tuesday and discover they’ve vanished.

Your therapist will talk with you ahead of time about the end of their placement and what your options are. Depending on the situation, that could include wrapping up your work together or transitioning to another therapist.

And yes, getting attached to the affordable therapist and then being annoyed that they’re graduating is a very reasonable reaction.

Tell us your budget. Seriously.

You don’t need to click through every therapist profile, open a calculator and create your own private therapy pricing spreadsheet.

Let us know what you can afford, whether you have insurance coverage and what you’re looking for help with. We can look at our student therapists, affordable counselling options, sliding-scale availability and other therapists who fit within that range.

We have a big team. Make us do the searching.
