Frequently Asked Questions

Usually because competition adds something practice doesn’t have: pressure.

Your brain starts thinking about the score, who’s watching, what your coach thinks, whether you’ll mess up, what this performance means for your season or whether you’re about to disappoint everyone. That can change your focus, tighten your body and make you start consciously controlling skills that are normally automatic.

Basically, you know how to perform. The problem is accessing what you already know how to do when the pressure is on.

That’s something you can train too. We can work on performance anxiety, attention, confidence, recovering quickly after mistakes and staying in the actual game instead of the 400 possible outcomes happening in your head.

You probably don’t need to think harder.

That’s often the problem.

Skills that normally happen automatically can suddenly feel impossible when you’re analyzing every tiny part of them. Instead of playing, you’re basically watching yourself play and providing live commentary.

Therapy can work on attention, anxiety, perfectionism and getting you out of your head enough to let your training do its job.

Because when being an athlete is a huge part of who you are, a bad performance can feel weirdly personal.

It goes from:

“I had a bad game.”

to:

“I’m playing terribly.”

to:

“I’m not good enough.”

to:

“I’m probably getting benched and my entire athletic career is over.”

That escalated quickly.

A bad performance can tell you something about what happened that day. It doesn’t need to become a full review of your worth as an athlete.

Being medically cleared to return and actually trusting your body again can be two very different milestones.

You might hesitate before a movement you used to do without thinking. Hold back during contact. Notice every sensation around the old injury. Wonder whether that little twinge means you’ve done it again.

That’s not something you necessarily fix by telling yourself to stop worrying.

Getting back physically is one part of returning to sport. Getting comfortable using your body like an athlete again is another.

This can be a pretty uncomfortable realization, especially when you’ve loved your sport for years.

Practice starts feeling like an obligation. Winning doesn’t feel that exciting. You’re tired all the time. You’re irritated with your coach or teammates. The thing that used to be your favourite part of the week becomes another thing you have to do.

Sometimes that’s burnout.

Sometimes something else in your life needs attention.

And sometimes your relationship with your sport has genuinely changed.

This decision gets complicated fast when you’ve invested years of your life into something.

There’s your team. Your coach. Your parents. The money. The travel. The early mornings. The opportunities you gave up. The version of your future you’ve pictured for years.

That’s a lot of voices in the room before we’ve even gotten to what you want.

You don’t have to make the decision in therapy. But it’s a pretty good place to figure out whether you still love the sport, love parts of it, need a break, or are mostly staying because leaving feels impossible.

There’s a difference between a coach challenging you and a coach making you feel terrible about yourself.

Good coaching can be demanding. It can involve criticism, high expectations, uncomfortable feedback and being told when you need to improve.

Humiliation, threats, constant personal attacks, comments about your body, intimidation or making you afraid to make a mistake are different.

And yes, it can be difficult to know where that line is when you’ve grown up in competitive sport and “that’s just how coaches are” has been the answer to everything.

Athletes can get really good at associating more with better.

More training. More reps. More discipline. More work.

So when you’re resting while somebody else is training, your brain helpfully points out that they’re probably getting better while you’re sitting on the couch.

Rest is still part of training.

Your muscles are aware of this even if your guilt hasn’t caught up yet.

This question can hit hard after retirement, injury, getting cut, graduating or deciding to leave your sport.

For years, people may have known you as the hockey player, the gymnast, the runner, the dancer.

Your schedule, friends, goals and routines were built around it too.

Then suddenly you have a free Saturday and no idea what normal people apparently do with those.

Losing the athlete role can create a genuine identity shift. There’s often some figuring-out to do afterward, especially if sport has been part of your life since you were a kid.

It depends on what you’re looking for.

If your main goal is specialized mental-performance work, a sport psychologist or mental-performance consultant may be the right fit.

If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, body image, burnout, trauma, relationships, identity, injury recovery or the general mental-health side of being an athlete, psychotherapy may make more sense.

At Rebound, we have therapists who understand competitive sport, including clinicians with their own athletic backgrounds.

Which means you can spend your appointment talking about the actual problem instead of spending 25 minutes explaining why getting benched really is a big deal.
