Seasonal Changes and Seasonal Depression

As the cold winter season hits in Ontario have you noticed a change in your mood, behaviour, and even motivation? Don’t we all wish we could be in the warm summer heat, enjoying 20-degree weather and feeling the hot sun hit our faces? As the negative temperatures creep in, let me tell you… you are not alone! Seasonal depression, or otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), affects a low percentage of people and can be more common in the fall and winter months as seasons and temperatures change. However, you can have symptoms in the summer months as well.

Symptoms / Signs of Seasonal Depression or (SAD)

  1. Feelings of sadness

  2. Changes in sleep and hygiene

  3. Low motivation and struggling with concentration

  4. Mood disturbances and changes

  5. Changes in energy levels

  6. Lower levels of activity enjoyment

  7. Diet and appetite changes

Do the symptoms listed above resonate with you? Have you ever felt a change in your mood, sleep, and energy levels as the colder seasons hit? We are here to help navigate these changes, increase your mood, and provide a friendly ear to listen while working collaboratively to maximize your Total Health. Some of the main sources of treatment for symptoms of seasonal depression are psychotherapy services, medications from a physician, and light therapy as expressed by the Canadian Association of Mental Health (CAMH, 2022).
