Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty

“Will I get accepted into this school? What if I do and I hate all my classes? What if I fail? Will I even be able to make any friends?”

We have all been there and stressed about the uncertainties of the future. I’m sure we are all familiar with how fast these thoughts can spiral, and how overwhelming it can feel.

The reality is that; the future will always be uncertain because it has not happened yet. So how can we get more comfortable with the idea of uncertainty and cope with it in a way that empowers us?

Here are 3 ways to help.

1.     Let go.

I know what your thinking – easier said than done! However, when we can learn to accept that we cannot control everything, we can start to feel liberated. We will develop a sense of resiliency in which we recognize that the only thing that we can control is our response to the outcome. This learning curve can also help you to learn new patterns within yourself. Perhaps you have deeply rooted assumptions and beliefs that affect how you navigate in the world, which ultimately holds you back from living the lifestyle of your dreams. A therapist can help you to untangle these assumptions, as you replace them with open minded and realistic notions that enhance your interaction with others and the world.

2.     Shift the Vision.

Our minds can often revert back to the worst-case scenario and negative thinking patterns. We can imagine the scenario and easily convince ourselves that all can go wrong. This merely sets us up for anxiety, stress and ultimately failure. This response may cause you to avoid the situation, which may provide temporary relief but ultimately maintains and worsens the stress and anxiety for the future – and that’s for certain!

Practice envisioning the best case scenario. Visualize your surroundings and how you will feel when it goes just the way that you desire. When you practice this, you can start to gain confidence and feel calmer as you approach the situation.

3.     Develop Coping Thoughts or Mantras.

I have faced and overcame uncertainty before.

I am safe in this present moment.

I know how to put my mind at ease and help my body to relax.

There are positive outcomes I am not aware of yet.

There is good coming into my life.

I am stronger than I think I am.

I trust the process of life.

I can be at peace on the inside, no matter what happens on the outside.

The fact that you are reading this now, proves that you have overcome uncertainty in the past. Keep these thoughts with you and say them out loud as you approach uncertainty. Growth happens when you leave your comfort zone and face the unknown. Be proud of yourself for making new moves, as you recognize that you are awaiting new possibilities.
