Kirsten Kunau
Student Therapist - MACP (IN PROGRESS)
My name is Kirsten and I’m grateful that my life experiences as a mother, partner, student, volunteer and therapy client have brought me here, to being a counsellor. I believe that, as human beings, we can experience life as messy, beautiful, challenging, wonderful and confusing, sometimes all in the same day! I’ve always been curious about people and wanted to know more about them. Connecting with people in a meaningful way, understanding what is important to them, and supporting them as they move towards their unique goals is a passion of mine.

My goal is to help clients gain clarity, celebrate their strengths, and address challenges in ways that feel right for them.

Working with me
I strive for clients to leave sessions with me feeling seen, heard, supported and hopeful. My goal is to help clients gain clarity, celebrate their strengths, and address challenges in ways that feel right for them.
Worth mentioning
As clients decide who they want to work with for counselling, there’s lots to take into consideration! Here are some additional perks you should know of!
Building trust is a key part of my client-centred approach to therapy. I aim to create a space that feels safe, supportive and comfortable in which you can share and be open about whatever feels important to you.
We all go through difficult times. I offer compassion and encouragement during times of struggle, with a deep-seated belief that being vulnerable and reaching for help is an act of courage.
I offer morning, daytime, and evening sessions to ensure accessibility for clients with busy schedules. Booking with me is easy, fast, and convenient with our online booking system. I also offer affordable rates to make therapy more accessible.
What does a session with me look like?
I provide a space and a time that is just to focus on you and to get curious about whatever it is that brought you here. I believe in being open to the full range of human experience during therapy. Together we can explore positive, uplifting, and joyful emotions as well as face those that are daunting, negative or uncomfortable. The atmosphere of my sessions is warm, collaborative, and encouraging.

A: Home renos, camping, hiking, swimming, board games, eating great food.
Q: Big Dreams?

My Approach
My approach to counselling is warm, encouraging and inclusive. I’ll work with you to explore your reasons for reaching out for support, gain insight into any ‘stuck points’ you might have and ensure I understand your goals for therapy. We will openly discuss all aspects of the counselling process, including different options for working towards your goals so that you can make choices that feel right for you.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Mindfulness involves deliberately focusing the attention in the present moment, without judging our experience. This can help us to become more aware of what we are experiencing, and develop greater tolerance for difficult situations and feelings.
Strength-Based Therapy
Each of us uses our unique strengths in many different ways throughout our experiences, however, we don’t always realize what our strengths are. With this approach, client strengths are uncovered, highlighted and celebrated. Strengths can then be applied in new settings, to manage challenges and meet goals.
Solution Focused Therapy
This collaborative approach involves reframing how we think about problems. By focusing on goals and solutions in detail, we can work together to figure out a step-by-step path from where you are to where you want to be.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interconnected. Unhelpful thoughts can block us from reaching our goals, have a negative effect on mood and lead to unwanted behaviours. CBT can help us recognize, challenge and change these unhelpful thoughts and their effects.
