Jessica Koppens
Student Therapist - MACP (IN PROGRESS)
Hi, I’m Jessica Koppens! I’m really glad you’re here 🤍
My journey to becoming a therapist started while working in frontline mental health and crisis support, where I spent several years supporting people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. That work shaped me in a lot of ways and reinforced my belief in how important it is to feel understood and supported. But before any of that, I was simply a person trying to navigate my own struggles, uncertainties, and growing pains. I’m currently completing my Master’s in Counselling Psychology and feel incredibly grateful to be at this stage of my career. Being trusted with people’s stories is something I never take for granted, and I feel very fortunate to continue learning and growing alongside my clients.
My goal is for each session to feel like a safe space to process, heal, and grow.

Working with Me
My goal is to create a space where you feel like you don’t have to have it all together. My style is warm, conversational, and down-to-earth, with plenty of room for honesty, reflection, and even the occasional laugh. I care deeply about helping people feel comfortable enough to show up as they are, without feeling judged, rushed, or pressured to have all the answers. My hope is that you leave sessions feeling understood, supported, and a little more connected to yourself, with a sense that whatever you’re facing doesn’t have to be carried alone.
Worth mentioning
As clients decide who they want to work with for counselling, there’s lots to take into consideration! Here are some additional perks you should know of!
As someone who has been on both sides of the therapy room, I know how vulnerable and awkward it can feel to open up to someone new. I want you to feel like you’re talking to a real person who genuinely wants to understand what you’re going through. You don’t need to have the perfect words, a clear goal, or everything figured out before you start. You can simply show up as you are, and we’ll figure it out together.
Sometimes we know we’re struggling but can’t quite understand why the same challenges keep showing up. One of my strengths is helping people recognize patterns in their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and coping strategies. When we begin to understand those patterns, we can start creating meaningful and lasting change.
I love helping people explore what’s happening beneath the surface, but I also know insight alone isn’t always enough. Alongside deeper reflection and emotional work, I draw on practical tools and strategies that can help you navigate challenges between sessions and feel more confident in everyday life.
What does a session with me look like?
Therapy with me is collaborative and tailored to you. Depending on what you’re bringing into the room, we might explore emotions, relationship patterns, past experiences, or the ways you’ve learned to protect yourself and cope over time. Together, we’ll make sense of your experiences at a pace that feels comfortable while working toward the changes that matter most to you.
Q&A just for fun
Q: Dogs or Cats?
A: I love them both, but dogs! I have a golden retriever who keeps life fun and reminds me to slow down.
Q: Guilty Pleasure?
A: Getting completely absorbed in a good “romantasy” series – please send all your book recommendations my way!
Q: Favourite Season?
A: Fall — sweater weather, changing leaves, and cozy days.
Q: Favourite Saying?
A: “Let’s cross that bridge when we get there”
Q: Biggest Pet Peeve
A: That caffeine increases anxiety (it’s still worth it).
Q: Ideal Vacation?
A: Anywhere with a beach, yummy food, good company, and nowhere I need to be.
Q: Hobbies?
A: Yoga, shopping, horseback riding, reading, and of course, spending quality time with friends and family.
Q: Big Dreams?
A: To build a life that feels fulfilling and well-balanced, continue growing as a therapist, and eventually spend more time traveling and being with the people (and animals) I love.
My Approach
My approach is rooted in the belief that our emotions, relationships, and past experiences shape how we move through the world. I draw primarily from attachment-based, emotion-focused, and experiential therapies, helping clients better understand themselves while creating space for meaningful processing and growth. I also incorporate practical tools from various therapeutic approaches wherever they can support your goals. Together, we’ll work to better understand what’s been weighing on you, make sense of patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and help you move toward the life and relationships you want.
Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)
AEDP focuses on healing through emotional processing, self-compassion, and the power of a safe therapeutic relationship. It helps clients move beyond coping and toward deeper emotional healing.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT helps clients better understand their emotions and relationship patterns while building stronger, more secure connections with themselves and the people they care about.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns while developing practical strategies for managing emotions, stress, anxiety, and everyday challenges.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
ACT helps clients develop psychological flexibility by learning how to respond differently to difficult thoughts and emotions while moving toward a life that reflects their values.
